* Tenders to be called for 90 one megawatt solar power plants
Fri, Jul 12, 2019, 02:46 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

July 12, Colombo: Steps have been taken to call tenders for the construction of 90 one-megawatt (MW) solar power plants, Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.

The Minister responding to a query raised by MP Thushara Indunil Amarasena in Parliament today said the government has awarded tenders for 76 projects under the procurement approvals.

"If we use renewable solar power it will not fall under sustainable power generation. That's the problem. We try to make it as popular as possible. We will approve if more than 5 MW. Some sort of standardization has been done," the Minister said.

MP Ashu Marasinghe joining the discussion said there are many issues regarding solar power generation.

He said that there is a stir in the society that generation of solar power is not profitable after the roofs of the new houses fitted with solar panels since a flat rate is given for 20 years for the generated electricity. He asked whether there is any plan implemented for a flat rate.

Responding to the query, Minister Karunanayake said the roof top solar power generation is a proposal from the 2015 Budget and there is a program to popularize it.

However, some have taken measures to distort the real situation of solar power battle program, the Minister said.

"Two companies are scrupulously trying to ruin the Rooftop concept. It has been decided to pay the same price for everybody. That's the strength that has been given to renewable energy. "

He further stated that if any company consumes more than 2,000 units, 25 percent of that should be renewable energy.
