Dec 25, Colombo: The Secretary to the President Dr. PB Jayasundara has instructed all Secretaries of Ministries to issue gazette notifications on the subjects and functions to be assigned to the State Ministries.

A portion of the subjects and institutions tasked to the Cabinet Minister is to be handed over to the state ministers through the gazette notification.

The Secretary to the President has also informed the Secretaries of the Ministries that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has issued the gazette notifications following the Cabinet proposal regarding the delegation of subjects and functions to state ministers who are not members of the Cabinet of Ministers.

A letter containing the subjects and functions to be allocated to the state ministries in relation to each of the respective ministries, with the relevant institutions and statutes, has also been sent to the secretaries of the ministries.

The letter also states that steps should be taken to issue the gazette notification on the advice of the President and assign the subjects and functions of the state ministers in terms of section 44 (5) of the constitution.

The Secretary to the President has informed the Secretaries of the Ministries to include in the Gazette notification the institutions, subjects, functions and ordinances that are relevant to the tasks to be fulfilled by the State Minister.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's caretaker government has 35 State Ministers and 3 Deputy Ministers in addition to the 16 cabinet ministers.
