* National Colleges of Education to be upgraded to university status

Dec 05, Colombo: The cabinet of ministers has approved a measure to upgrade National Colleges of Education in the country to the status of the University Faculties with the aim to convert the entire teaching staff in Sri Lanka as graduates.

As stated in the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's Policy Statement 'Vistas of Prosperity and Splendor', a program to convert the entire teacher community of Sri Lanka into graduates, for enhancing the professionalism of the teachers, has been planned to be implemented under the theme: 'An Informed Citizen' and 'A Society Endowed with Knowledge'.

Accordingly, the Cabinet in principle at its meeting yesterday has approved a proposal made by the Minister of Education to convert the National Colleges of Education to the status of the University Faculties.

The measure is aimed providing opportunities for the teachers to obtain their degrees.

The Cabinet also granted approval to appoint an Experts Committee representing the fields of Education and Higher Education, to fulfill the requisite Academic and Legal functions with regard to the implementation of this program.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of a 'Closed Education Service' in order to resolve the problems faced by education sector employees expeditiously.

"It has been identified that it is appropriate to establish a Closed education service consisting of teachers, principals, in-service advisors, teacher educators and Education Administrative Service Officers to resolve their professional problems expeditiously, perform their appraisals systematically and transparently, uplift their professionalism and enhance their job satisfaction, enabling them to deliver their services in an efficient and effective manner," a statement on cabinet decisions said.

Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Education to establish an Experts' Committee comprising of subject professionals and educational experts to study and prepare recommendations pertaining to the plan, received the cabinet approval.
