Aug 19, Colombo: Ampara police today arrested another two active members of National Thowheed Jammath (NTJ) and trainees of Mohammed Saharan, the suicide bomber and deceased leader of NTJ.
The two suspects were arrested during a raid on Monday (19) by the officers of the Ampara Police on the instructions of Ampara Superintendent of Police Gayantha Marapana, according to information provided by the State Intelligence Service.
The police said that two suspects have received weapons training at the Nuwara Eliya camp under the NTJ leader Mohammed Saharan, who was killed in the suicide bomb attack on Shangri-La hotel in Colombo on April 21.
One of the suspects was identified as Mohammedu Zaheer Muhammad Ahsan, alias Abu Amara, a 22-year-old resident of Gelioya, Kandy.
The other suspect is 24-year-old Mohammedu Awutath Anis Mohamed, alias Abu Subhehir, a resident of Galle area and a civil engineer. The police say he has been involved in the propaganda and recruiting to the group with the Naufur Moulavi of the NTJ organization.
Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said including the two arrested today Ampara Police have so far arrested 15 active members of the NTJ organization. Out of the 15 suspects, three have been handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Division for further investigations.
SP Ruwan Gunasekara said one of the suspects Naufur Moulavi's, 16-year-old son, who was arrested by the police, has been remanded until 21st August after he was produced before the Ampara Magistrate's Court.
The remaining 11 suspects are being detained at the Ampara Police stations and questioned.
