* Makandure Madush's lawyer files motion in court requesting foreign travel ban on CID director
Mon, Aug 19, 2019, 10:58 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Aug 19, Colombo: A motion was filed today at the Fort Magistrate's Court requesting to ban the Director of Criminal Investigations Department, SSP Shani Abeysekara from foreign travel.

The attorney representing the powerful underworld leader Makandure Madush has submitted the motion to the Fort Magistrate's Court today.

The lawyer said in his motion to the court that his client has been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) since his deportation from Dubai and the 90-day detention period has ended on August 3rd.

Accordingly, the lawyer in a private complaint requested the court to release his client.

The CID arrested the organized crime leader when he arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) on 5th May after he was deported from Dubai.

The lawyer for Makandure Madush in the motion requested the court today to impose a foreign travel ban on CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekara since there is a rumor that Mr. Abeysekara is planning to leave the country to avoid court proceedings regarding this complaint.

Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered that the matter be considered on the 29th of this month.

Makandure Madush was detained for over 90 days for questioning under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, on allegations of attempts to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena, former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and several top police officers.

Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake on 9th August ordered the Director of the CID to appear in court on the 21st of this month to inquire into the legal conditions under which Madush was arrested and detained for more than 90 days under the PTA.
