* Police arrest 12 persons attempting to illegally migrate via sea

Aug 18, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police have arrested twelve people suspected of attempting to illegally migrate through the seas in Chilaw area today.

Chilaw Police arrested the suspects while they were traveling in a small lorry along the Chilaw-Iranawila road.

The suspects aged 19 to 43 years are residents of Kalkuda, Valaichchenai, police said.

Police said two persons who were involved in the smuggling racket were also among the arrested.

The group has said that they have come to the area for seine fishing. However the police point out that due to the rough seas these days seine fishing is not taking place in the seas around Chilaw.
