Aug 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe Saturday said he would not allow the country's economy to collapse just as he did not allow politics to collapse.
Speaking at the inauguration of vehicle assembly plant of Mahendra Ideal Lanka (Pvt) Ltd in Welipenna, Mathugama this morning Prime Minister Wickremesinghe said encouraging local manufacturing was one of the main features of the Sri Lankan government.
He pointed out that this was just the beginning and in the next two years everyone would see the results of the government's efforts to build the factories and boost the economy of the country.
Speaking further, the Premier said he will never let the economy of the country to collapse.
"Despite the economic burden it had, the country moved forward during the last four years. The country's economy was not allowed to collapse even after the Easter bombing. I have not fallen in my politics. I will not allow the economy of the country to fall either."
The Premier said the economy was normalized within two, three months after the Easter Sunday attacks.
"Tourist arrivals have increased. By September, October, it will be difficult to find tourist rooms. We've gone through tough times. We faced debt, drought, bomb problems. We have protected the economy of the country. We have the potential to achieve the desired results over the next five years. We have to take another leap forward. Or fall and go down. I have great faith that we can take the leap."
High Commissioner of India in Sri Lanka Taranjit Singh Sandhu, MPs Kumara Welgama, Hirunika Premachandra, Managing Director of Mahindra & Mahindra Pawan Goenka, Chairman of Ideal Lanka Pvt. Nalin Welgama and Executive Director Aravinda de Silva, local politicians, and officials of the company participated in the occasion.
