Aug 16, Colombo: The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) says they will launch an island wide strike from Monday.
The strike will be carried out on several issues affecting the health sector including the failure to enforce the minimum standard in medical education, said the GMOA secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge.
Speaking to media Dr. Aluthge said although the authorities are continually being informed of the problems in the Health sector there is no solution to the issues and therefore GMOA has decided to definitely launch a strike next week.
The decision to launch a strike was taken at a meeting of the Government Medical Association Executive Committee held Thursday (15).
Dr. Aluthge said the GMOA decided to make the public aware of the island wide strike action using banners and leaflets in all hospitals island wide and stress to the authorities to table the minimum standard of medical education in Parliament within the next few days.
Importing cheap substandard drugs to the country, creating the foundation to produce substandard doctors through SAITM, and political interference in doctors' transfers are some other issues.
Dr. Aluthge said considering the response of the Health Minister and the relevant authorities on all these matters, the GMOA will launch the strike within the week starting on the 19th.
