Aug 13, Colombo: Chairman of the Elections Commission, Mahinda Deshapriya says the Provincial Council election should be held before other elections if the country respects democracy.

Speaking at a media briefing held in Colombo today, Deshapriya stressed that nothing has been done to prevent delay of the Provincial Council election for nearly two years.

The Chairman pointed out that the entire Parliament is responsible for not being active to avert the delay. He added that the Elections Commission is always ready to hold the Provincial Council election at any point of time.

Deshapriya said the Election Commission was ready to hold either Presidential or general election as well. "We have prepared papers from January 9 to hold presidential election and also for provincial council elections in both systems. But for the sake of people's democratic rights, the PC elections should be held first."
