* Doctor arrested in Kurunegala over suspicious assets handed over to CID

May 26, Colombo: The doctor attached to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, who was arrested over amassing wealth through suspicious means, has been handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohamed Shafi was arrested on Friday night based on information received by the Kurunegala police.

The 42-year-old resident of Kurunegala was continuously questioned by the police since his arrest and handed over to the CID for further investigations Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Director of Kurunegala Hospital Dr. Sarathweera Bandara said there are many other allegations against this doctor. He said that a special investigation has been launched into the allegation that he has performed unconsented sterilizations of women.

"This doctor has admitted that he performed about 8000 caesarean sections. Also, there were allegations that sterilizations were done in 4000 of those surgeries. We are investigating the allegation. In addition, the doctor has given a newborn child born at the Kurunegala Hospital to another family with the consent of the mother changing the name of the child. We carried out an investigation. The report has been submitted to the Health Ministry," the Hospital Director said.
