May 22, Colombo: The United National Party (UNP) has decided to suspend the party membership of the mayor of Weligama Rehan Jayawickrama for allegedly violating party discipline.
United National Party General Secretary and Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has told the Sinhala daily the Lankadeepa yesterday that the party had decided to suspend the party membership of Rehan Jayawickrama for issuing articles to media criticizing the party leadership.
Minister Kariyawasam said Mr. Jayawickrama was summoned to party headquarters Sirikotha last week over the allegation and a disciplinary inquiry was conducted. The Mayor had promised that he would not repeat such a mistake again, said the UNP General Secretary.
However, the Mayor has again issued statements to the media criticizing the leadership in violation of party discipline and hence his party membership was suspended, the Minister further said.
It has been reported that Jayawickrama wrote to the UNP leader, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe last week requesting a change in leadership for the betterment of the party. In his letter he has reportedly asked the UNP leader to hand over the party leadership to deputy leader Sajith Premadasa.
Accordingly, the party is taking measures to send the letter informing the suspension of party membership to Mayor Rehan Jayawickrema, the UNP General Secretary said.
