Tue, May 21, 2019, 07:32 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

May 21, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Ministry of Finance announced today that the special commodity tax on imported big onions has been increased with effect from midnight Tuesday (21) as a measure to protect the local farmer.

Accordingly, special commodity levy on one kilogram of imported big onion has been increased by Rs. 20.

As the locally produced big onions are now being received in the market, the Ministry has taken the decision to increase levies to enable the local farmers to get a better price for their products.

Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera has signed the relevant gazette notification.
