* Suspect with close links to Easter Sunday suicide attackers arrested

May 16, Colombo: The Police have arrested a suspect, who is believed to have maintained close links with the Easter Sunday suicide bombers, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

Addressing the defense media conference Thursday (16) SP Gunasekara revealed that the suspect, identified as Mohamed Rizwan, was arrested yesterday by the Western Province Intelligence Division based on information received. Several passports found in his possession have also been taken into custody.

The Police Media Spokesman said that the suspect, a resident of Mabola Wattala, had maintained links with the extremist terrorist group. Investigators expect to uncover many details on the attacks from the suspect, he added.

SP Ruwan Gunasekara further said that intelligence investigators have been deployed to gather information on those who are engaged in violent incidents and individuals who are leading such incidents and investigations are being conducted into the incidents that took place in the Northwestern Province and in the Minuwangoda area.

Police also informed the individuals who were involved in the recent violence to surrender to the police or to the courts.

The Police Media Spokesman announced that police curfew was not imposed today in any area of the island as there is a peaceful environment. But the Armed Force and the Police have deployed the highest number of officials to maintain security, he added.

The Police Spokesman said that they have taken necessary action to provide maximum security during the Wesak days. Police officers have been deployed to provide security to those who are leaving Colombo and also to handle the movement of traffic.

Expressing his views to the media conference Air Force Commander Air Marshal Kapila Jayampathy said that the Air Force was providing maximum security to schools and all religious places of worship. Security has been provided without maintaining any loophole. Security has been consolidated at the Bandaranaike International Airport while obstructions to passengers have been minimized.
