* President to pardon 762 prisoners on the occasion of Vesak

May 16, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena will grant Presidential Pardon to 762 prisoners serving time in the island's jails on the occasion of Vesak.

The state ceremony to release the prisoners will be held at the Welikada Prison Grounds under the patronage of the President on Saturday, the Vesak Full Moon Poya Day (18).

The Presidential Pardon for the inmates is granted under Article 34 of the Constitution. Prisoners who have been convicted for minor offences under the Penal Code will be granted Presidential pardon. Inmates convicted of severe crimes such as rape, crimes against children and drug offences will not be pardoned.

This year, 736 male prisoners and 26 female prisoners are to be released under the Presidential Pardon.

Accordingly, 117 inmates of the Welikada Prison, 62 inmates from the Pallekele Open Prison, 55 from the Mahara prison, 50 from Anuradhapura prison, 53 inmates from the Pallansena prison and inmates from 30 other prisons island wide will receive Presidential Pardon.
