* Severe action against curfew violators- Police spokesman

May 15, Colombo: The police curfew has been imposed in the Northwestern province and the Gampaha police division from 7 pm today until 4 am tomorrow.

Police Media Spokesperson SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the three armed forces and police re instructed strictly enforce the law against those who violate the curfew.

The Spokesman said 78 suspects have been arrested in connection with the unruly and violent activities that took place in several police divisions of the Northwestern Province in the past two days.

All 78 arrested suspects have been produced in courts and remanded, SP Gunasekara added.

He said investigations are ongoing to arrest more suspects while a number of video footage of the disruptive acts taken into custody by the police is now being used to identify the suspects involved in the incidents.

The spokesman said they have decided to inform the employers and work places of the suspects arrested and those who are to be arrested in connection with the unruly violent attacks during further investigations, that they have been arrested for their involvement in disruptive activities.

"It should be mentioned that we have decided to inform the employers of the workplace to institute disciplinary action against the individuals arrested in connection with the mob attacks against the Muslim community."

Meanwhile, SP Ruwan Gunasekara said 85 suspects have been arrested in connection with the April 21 suicide bombing attack. The suspects detained in the custody of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) have been handed over to the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID).
