May 15, Colombo: Sri Lanka Army said on Wednesday it is investigating a video clip circulating in social media that showed a person dressed in a uniform similar to that of the Army uniform was watching while a group of violent saboteurs were in action in the general area of Thunmodara.
The Army, responding to the allegations that in some occasions, army personnel have assisted the mob in attacking Muslim businesses and homes, sought assistance from the general public to identify the individual to take disciplinary action.
In a CCTV footage released from a mosque in Thunmodara, a person dressed in an Army uniform is seen gesturing mobs to approach the mosque to attack and leaving the scene.
The Army advised the public to help to trace this person for necessary action.
"The Army on watching this particular video clip has launched a special inquiry to identify the person suspected to be a military member. The public are also advised to help the Army to trace this person for necessary action," the Army said in a statement.
If the inquiry confirms that the person in question happened to be an Army member, the Army will take all necessary disciplinary actions against the said member, it added.
In addition, the public is advised to inform Special Investigation Unit of Corps of Military Police through 0112514280 if they possess any information to this effect.
