* Sri Lankan government to ensure every citizen has own plot of land

Mar 23, Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says the present government just as it ensured the democratic right of the people, will ensure the people's right to own a plot of land and the right for digital knowledge.

Addressing a ceremony held to distribute land deeds to farmers at the Weber Stadium in Batticaloa today (23), the Prime Minister said the government hopes to provide the ownership of a plot of land to everyone in the country.

At the ceremony held under the patronage of the Prime Minister 7,200 farmers who are living in state lands and who have developed lands received allowance permits and land deeds,

Speaking further Mr. Wickremesinghe said that only the United National Front can protect the rights of the people and take the country forward and therefore, everyone should unite and rally around the United National Front to get their hopes fulfilled.

"We gave the people the democratic right. We will grant land rights as well. It is also one of our main objectives to give own land to all those who live in this country through new laws."

"We have made 13 years of education compulsory to provide education and knowledge. Providing trained teachers to schools and providing computer tablets for advanced level students have been started. We also take measures to provide credit facilities for students who are not qualified to enter Universities to obtain further education through private institutions," the Premier said.

He said today the whole world is rapidly digitalizing. "Every home has a mobile phone. Digitalization of the economy is taking place and all offices such as land deeds, district secretariats are being digitalized. We have planned digitalization at village level through the Grama Rajya program," the Prime Minister said.

Today's ceremony was organized under the program to distribute one million land deeds to citizens. By now, 250,000 land deeds have been distributed island wide since 2015 and another 15,000 land plots island wide have been identified to give ownership permits.

The program is being implemented by Minister of Land and Parliamentary Reforms Gayantha Karunathilake.
