Mar 22, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court today allowed the police to detain 12 people and question over a plot to assassinated a Tamil politician.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne issued a court order today (12) to detain 12 persons including underworld members and persons, who had connections with LTTE and question them on recovering weapons including firearms, hand grenades and other weapons hidden by the LTTE and selling them to underworld members.
The investigating officers informed the courts that the investigations were carried out on the order of the IGP according to the intelligence received and a live claymore bomb had been found near the house of one suspect, a resident of Kilinochchi.
Meanwhile, information has been received that a Tamil suspect has sold five pistols and several other arms to the underworld members, the investigating officers further told the Court.
Investigations have revealed that there were plans to use these weapons to kill a Tamil politician on the instructions of expatriate former LTTE cadres.
The investigators also informed the court that investigations are underway to determine whether there was any attempt to re-activate the proscribed terrorist group in Sri Lanka.
The suspects, who were detained by the orders of a SP, were ordered to be produced before the court again on the 26th of April.
