* Five sand racketeers arrested for attacking STF and obstructing duties

Mar 17, Colombo: Five people have been arrested in connection with an incident where police Special Task Force personnel who had gone to raid an illegal sand mining operation in Ariyalai, Jaffna, were attacked and hindered from carrying out their duties.

The police media spokesman's office said that two men and three woman were arrested in connection with the incident.

A tractor that was brought to load the sand and a motorcycle were also taken in to police custody.

The suspects, aged between 18 and 34 years, are residents of Ariyalai, Jaffna.
