* Sri Lanka Police in special operation arrest 2,646 people for various crimes

Mar 16, Colombo: A special 9-hour police operation launched Friday night covering all police divisions across the island has made 2,646 arrests for various violations of law, Police Media Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said.

The special police operation under the direction of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundera was carried out from Friday (15) 9:00 p.m. to Saturday (16) 6:00 a.m. by all police stations in the country.

During the operation, the police arrested 1,790 individuals on charges related to drugs and illicit liquor and 125 suspects for selling alcohol without a license, consuming alcohol at public places and other crimes.

In addition, Police have taken into custody 623 persons wanted on arrest warrants and 101 suspects in connection with other crimes.

Six individuals were arrested for the possession of firearms without a valid license while one suspect has been arrested with a hand grenade.
