* Legal actions into the death of Borella Police OIC will continue

Mar 10, Colombo: Police say that legal action is being taken on the hit and run accident that killed the Borella Police traffic OIC Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of Traffic and Road Safety Ajith Rohana at a media briefing held today at the Police Headquarters said the driver of the Defender SUV who knocked down the Borella Police traffic OIC is currently in remand custody.

DIG Rohana said the police have the CCTV video footage on the vehicle from the time it left the night club in the early morning of the fateful day and until it was hidden in Pelawatta area.

He said the video footage will be sent to the media as soon as the court actions are completed.

The Traffic DIG also said legal action will be taken against people who spread false reports on the accident through the social media. He said several individuals spreading false news have been identified and they will be produced in court as evidence when the case is heard in the courts.

The OIC of the traffic division of the Borella Police, Inspector Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra, 52, was critically injured when a Defender vehicle ran a red light and hit the OIC who was traveling on his motorbike, at the Duplication Road -Buller's Road junction in Bambalapitiya in the early morning of 24th February.

The Defender driven by Navidu Omesh Ratnayake, and another vehicle arrived with the Defender had fled the scene leaving the badly injured officer.

The officer who was admitted to the ICU of Colombo National Hospital never regained consciousness and succumbed to his injuries yesterday.

Meanwhile, Inspector Sarathchandra's funeral will take place at Borella Cemetery tomorrow.
