* Special police operation in Western Province nabs 527 drunk drivers

Mar 10, Colombo: A special traffic operation conducted on the 8th and 09th of March in the Western Province resulted in the arrest of 527 drunk drivers.

Police say the number of persons driving while drunk in early hours of the weekend days after consuming liquor at bars and night clubs has increased.

The operation was conducted under the supervision of the IGP Pujith Jayasundara. The police apprehended 222 drunk drivers on March 08 and 305 drunk drivers on March 09.

Among the arrested drivers are lawyers, doctors and top businessmen, according to the Police.

The police expects to file cases and implement law against them in the next few days and receive orders to temporarily suspend their driver licenses.

Police Headquarters said similar operations will continue in the future.
