* Borella Police OIC critically injured in hit and run passes away

Mar 09, Colombo: A police officer who was critically injured in a hit-and-run accident in Bambalapitiya last month has passed away at the National Hospital Colombo today.

The OIC of the traffic division of the Borella Police, Inspector Ananda Sagara Sarathchandra was critically injured when a Defender vehicle ran him over and fled the scene in the early hours of 24th February in Bambalapitiya.

Inspector Sarathchandra was on life support at the Intensive Care Unit of the Colombo National Hospital when he succumbed to his injuries today.

The Defender SUV driven by Navidu Omesh Ratnayake, son of President's Security Division SP Pradeep Ratnayake, had knocked down the Police Officer, who was on his motorbike travelling on the Colombo-Galle road towards Kollupitiya on an official duty, at Bambalapitiya and fled the scene.

Another vehicle which arrived with the Defender has also fled the scene without reporting the accident.

The police have arrested the drivers and passengers of both vehicles including a UPFA parliamentarian's son and a UNP Colombo Municipal Councilor.

The driver of the Defender vehicle has been remanded till March 11 while the other seven suspects have been released on bail.
