Mar 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has brought the country's telecommunication authority, Telecommunications Regulatory Commission under his control in order to shape the regulatory process.
President Sirisena has issued an extraordinary gazette notice bringing the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) under the purview of the Ministry of Defense.
The extraordinary gazette notification No. 2113/67 issued on March 08 amending the duties and functions of Defense Ministry includes the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission under its purview to "Promote sustained development in the telecommunication industry by shaping the regulatory process, protecting public interest and being responsive to challenges in an increasingly competitive market."
The President through the extraordinary gazette also placed the financially troubled SriLankan Airlines and its subsidiaries under the purview of the Ministry of Finance.
Meanwhile the Mahinda Rajapaksa National Tele-cinema Park (Ranmihithenna) has been brought under the Minister of Housing, Construction and Cultural Affairs.
The President has also brought Sri Lanka Telecom PLC and its subsidiaries and associates under the Minister of Telecommunications, Foreign Employment and Sports.
