Mar 09, Colombo: Sri Lanka's ruling United National Party (UNP) will launch a fresh island wide membership drive aiming to recruit new members and bring them close to party headquarters ahead of anticipated national and presidential elections.
The membership drive named 'Sirikotha Gamata' will be launched under the patronage of UNP leader and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe tomorrow (March 10) from Kalutara district.
Along with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers, UNP Parliamentarians and Chief Organizers will participate in the program to be held in all eight electorates of the district.
The membership drive will be launched centering Agalawatta, Panadura, Horana, Kalutara, Matugama, Bandaragama, Beruwela and Bulathsinhala electorates of Kalutara district. An electoral organizer has been appointed for each electorate and a number of ministers are coordinating the work.
A total of 2,500 members from outside the electorate are expected to participate. Groups will go from door to door and enlighten the people on the present situation and the future outlook to bring people closer to the party. The people can present their problems directly to the party representatives.
Minister Sajith Premadasa will function as the chief coordinating officer of UNP at Agalawatta electorate. The function will start at 8.00 am. Meanwhile, Minister Ravi Karunanayake is appointed as the chief coordinating officer of Panadura electorate. The function in this regard will start at 10.00 am. Minister Kabir Hashim is appointed as the chief coordinating officer of UNP for Horana electorate. Minister Naveen Dissanayake will act as the coordinating officer for Kalutara Electorate.
This is the first such program to be launched in Kalutara. It is expected to be extended to other districts as well.
