Sat, Mar 9, 2019, 12:43 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Mar 09, Colombo: Distribution of compensation for farmers affected by the crop damage due to the fall armyworm (Sena caterpillar) infestation will commence tomorrow (Mar 10) from Ampara district.

Providing compensation to the farmers affected by Sena Caterpillar will be held at Ampara District Secretariat auditorium tomorrow by the Agricultural Insurance Board under the guidance of Minister of Agriculture, P. Harrison.

In the first phase compensation will be paid to 307 farmers, who lost 100 percent of cultivation in the Ampara District. Under this phase compensation will be paid for 167 hectares of crop damaged land. The Agriculture Insurance Board has decide to pay Rs. 40,000 per hectare and the government has allocated Rs. 250 million for this purpose.

The Department of Agriculture had prepared reports on destroyed crops in Anuradhapura, Ampara, Monaragala, Kurunegala, Trincomalee and Jaffna districts.

The Ministry of Agriculture says that since the fall armyworm infestation has successfully been controlled, the farmers can start the Yala Season cultivations without any fear.

Accordingly, 15,000 hectares of land is expected to be cultivated with maize in the next Yala season.
