June 28, Colombo: A writ petition has been filed in the Court of Appeal, seeking an interim order preventing the implementation of the death sentence.

An individual named Malinda Seneviratne has filed the petition requesting the Appellate Court to issue an injunction to the Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Welikada Prison preventing the implementation of the death penalty.

The petition filed by Malinda Seneviratne has named the Commissioner General of Prisons, the Superintendent of Welikada Prison and the Attorney General as respondents.

The petitioner has stated that the President has announced that he has signed execution warrants for four death row prisoners. The petitioner points out that the death penalty is a serious violation of human rights.

He therefore requested the Court of Appeal to issue an order preventing the execution of the sentence to the Commissioner General of Prisons and the Superintendent of Prisons.
