* Strong governments didn't bring prosperity to low income families for last 21 years, PM responds to opposition
Wed, Jun 19, 2019, 10:35 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 19, Colombo: Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (19) stated that the people who allege that the country does not have a strong government were not able to bring prosperity to 600,000 families for 21 years after having a strong government.

"The opposition says there is no government in the country. For last 21 years when they were running a so called strong government, they couldn't provide Samurdhi benefits for the deserving families," the Premier said at a meeting held in Homagama this evening.

"On the other hand, United National Front (UNF) government, within just a year after the 'Ministry of Samurdhi' was taken over, managed to provide Samurdhi benefits to 600,000 more families."

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe made this observation addressing a ceremony held at Wilfred Senanayake Grounds in Homagama today (19th) evening for the distribution of Samurdhi benefits to 4510 families.

Mr. Wickremesinghe pointed out that the present government was able to take over a bankrupt country and rebuild a strong country.

"In 2015, we've inherited a bankrupt country. But the government managed to rebuild the country. Those opponents who couldn't stomach the development drive are accusing and criticizing the government," the Premier further said.

"We are being attacked because they have no answer for the development work we are doing in the village. The opposition know that they cannot challenge the government in the development front as we have been carrying out a massive development drive at the village level. Therefore they try to level unfounded allegations against us. We are doing greater development work in the villages which even breaks the record of the UNP Government from 1977-94. As soon as the UNF took over the Ministry of Samurdhi and Social Empowerment, we manage to provide Samurdhi benefits for 600,000 families who deserved but were denied due to various reasons."

"We managed to rebuild the economy of the country and rescued from the bankruptcy."

"Our opponents thought we would be completely destroyed with the Easter Sunday Bomb Attack. But, we have the courage and the strength to face any challenge or catastrophe. Therefore, be assured that we will never stop our village level development programs," the Premier emphasized.

Minister of Primary Industries and Social Empowerment Daya Gamage, Minister of Power, Energy and Business Development Ravi Karunanayake, Non-cabinet Minister of National Economic Policies Dr. Harsha De Silva, State Minister of Finance Eran Wickramaratne and Colombo District MPs Mujibur Rahuman and S.M. Marikkar were also present.
