June 15, Colombo: A Sri Lankan court Friday granted bail to two suspects, who were in remand custody since their arrest in connection with the abduction of 11 youths.
The Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake Friday (June 14) ordered the release of Navy officer Nandapriya Hettihandy and a fisheries boat owner Anton Fernando arrested in connection with the abduction and forced disappearance of 11 youth from Colombo and its suburbs between 2008 and 2009.
The 33 year old Navy member attached to Kankasanthurai Navy camp was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in February this year.
The Magistrate granted bail to the suspects after they were read of their bail conditions. The suspects were released on a Rs. 150,000 cash bail and two personal sureties of Rs. 1 million each.
The Magistrate also banned foreign travel for the suspects and ordered to inform the Department of Immigration and Emigration of the ban.
In addition, the suspects were ordered to appear before the Police Robbery and Homicide unit on the last Sunday of each month between 9.00 and 12.00 am.
Five other suspects in the case including Navy Lieutenant Commander Nilantha Sampath Munasinghe and Sumith Ranasinghe have been remanded till the 26th of this month.
The Magistrate also ordered the seven suspects of the case including Former Navy Media Spokesperson D.K.P. Dassanayake to appear before court on July 03.
