* Sri Lankan farmers instructed not to cultivate maize in Yala season due to Fall Armyworm threat
Sat, Jan 26, 2019, 09:01 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 26, Colombo: The Director General of Agriculture Dr. MWM Weerakoon has informed the farmers not to plant maize for the Yala season until further notice in order to control the spread of the Fall Armyworm (Sena caterpillar).

He said that the cultivating maize during the interim period before the Yala season is hampering the efforts to contain the Fall Armyworm infestation. Main reason is the rapid spread of the caterpillar.

Accordingly, Director General of Agriculture requests the farmers not to plant maize until the measure to bring the caterpillar infestation under control is successful.

Apart from maize, a large number of fruits and vegetables have come under the caterpillar attack. On the instruction of the President, agriculture officials and relevant sections have taken swift measures to control the insect.
