* Independence Day celebration to be named as National Day Celebration
Wed, Jan 23, 2019, 11:29 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 23, Colombo: The national Independence Day will be celebrated as the National Day celebrations, Minister of Internal and Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government Vajira Abeywardena said.

Participating in a media briefing held at the Government Information Department today, Minister Abeywardena said the Independence Day is mentioned as the National Day in the 8th article of the Constitution and the day will be commemorated accordingly.

"Independence Day is called National Day. It is mentioned as the National Day in the Clause 8 of the Constitution, not as Freedom Day. Do not make a big problem out of this. According to clause 8 of the Constitution, this is correct," the Minister was quoted as saying.

Clause 8 of Sri Lanka Constitution says "The National Day of the Republic of Sri Lanka shall be the fourth day of February."
