Jan 21, Colombo: The Kuliyapitiya Police Sunday night have arrested 12 senior students of Wayamba University of Sri Lanka on suspicion of assaulting a group of students of the same university.

The police say the group of students, who were assaulted, were first year students and they have acted against ragging.

According to the police the senior students have instructed the first year students to wear a specific outfit for the lectures but around 30 student have disregarded the instructions and come to the campus wearing normal clothes.

On that night, the senior students have allegedly assaulted three freshman students, who led the defiance against the ragging, when they were going for the dinner in the University premises, according to the statements made to the police.

The assaulted students complained to the Inspector General of Police, the Police Commission and the Human Rights Commission last week regarding the failure of the police to arrest the students even three weeks after the attack.

The 12 students arrested Sunday accordingly, will be produced before the Kuliyapitiya Magistrate's Court today (21).
