* Public Health Inspectors to launch token strike on Monday
Sun, Jan 20, 2019, 01:30 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 20, Colombo: Public Health Inspectors of Sri Lanka are due to launch an island wide strike Monday (21), the President of the Public Health Inspectors Union of Sri Lanka Upul Rohana said.

The PHI Union has decided to launch an island wide token strike from 7.30 am tomorrow until 4.30 pm, Upul Rohana said.

Upul Rohana explained that currently, public health inspectors are monitored by the Chief Administrative Public Health Inspector, who is working in the Ministry of Health.

However, the government is planning to appoint a doctor to a new post called a Community Medical Specialist in between the Director General of Health Services and the Chief Administrative Public Health Inspector, said, Upul Rohana.

The Union alleges that officials are attempting to immobilize the role of administrative officers in the field. The UNion is against the government's move and had informed the Secretary to the Ministry of Health two weeks ago to suspend the move. Since there was no response from the Ministry of Health the union has decided to launch the strike tomorrow, Upul Rohana said.

The union leader said if there is no response to the token strike and the demands are not met, the union will launch an indefinite strike island wide and a protest campaign.
