* Sri Lanka Navy arrests 20 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan territorial waters

Jan 13, Colombo: Sri Lanka Navy said it has arrested 20 Indian fishermen and seized three trawlers in two separate incidents for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL) and fishing in Sri Lankan waters.

Naval personnel attached to the Northern Naval Command, apprehended 9 Indian fishermen along with two trawlers for poaching in the Sri Lankan territorial waters in northern seas near Delft Island on Saturday (12).

The arrested fishermen along with their fishing trawlers and fishing gear have been brought to the naval base SLNS Elara in Karainagar and SLNS Buwaneka in Nachchikudah.

After a medical examination, the Indian fishermen will be handed over to relevant Assistant Director of Fisheries for onward legal action, the Navy said.
