Fri, Jan 11, 2019, 08:48 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Jan 11, Colombo: The Colombo Commercial High Court today ordered parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa to pay Rs 10 million in compensation to General Secretary of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Tilvin Silva.

MP Wimal Weerawansa was found guilty of violating the Intellectual Property Act through his book titled "Naththa Wenuwata Aththa"(Lies Instead of Truth).

Colombo Commercial High Court, Ruwan Fernando, ruled that the complainant's intellectual property rights have been violated by the defendant through the book by including certain documents of the party without permission.

The judge also issued a prohibition order preventing the printing, publishing and selling the book.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva had alleged that the book published by former JVP member Wimal Weerawansa had violated the provisions of the Intellectual Property Act by including information from the documents discussed during the JVP Politburo meetings when Weerawansa was a member of the party. The petitioner sought Rs. 10 million as damages.

The lawsuit filed also sought a restraining order to prevent MP Weerawansa from publishing and distributing his book.

Weerawansa who broke away from JVP and formed a new political party National Freedom Front, had claimed that unfair and unethical practices by the party leaders led him to publish the book containing extracts of party's political documents and plans.
