Jan 10, Colombo: Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena will be arriving in Manilla next week on a five-day visit on an invitation from Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte.

President Maithripala Sirisena's first state visit to the country from January 15 to 19 is aimed at improving economic and political ties with Manila, the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.

"He will meet with President Duterte on 16 January 2019 to hold bilateral discussions on areas of mutual interest, including political, economic, cultural and people-to-people engagement," a DFA statement on said.

While in Manila, President Sirisena is also scheduled to visit the Asian Development Bank, and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños, Laguna.

Sirisena's visit is the first by a Sri Lankan President serving both as Head of State and Government under Sri Lanka's 1978 Constitution. It is the second by a Sri Lankan leader since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 1961.
