Jan 08, Colombo: Today marks the 10th death anniversary of veteran journalist Lasantha Wickremetunga, the founding editor of English weekly, Sunday Leader.

A graveside service will be held this morning at the Borella Cemetery to mark the 10th anniversary of the assassination of the journalist.

Lasantha Wickremetunga was assassinated on January 8, 2009 by four assailants who stopped him on his way to his office on Attidiya-Mt. Lavinia road, in a suburb of Sri Lankan capital.

The CID had arrested a former Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) and former Crimes Office-In-Charge of the Mount Lavinia Police for concealing and destroying information pertaining to the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunge on orders from above.

However, despite extensive investigations by the CID, the actual suspects of his murder still remain at large.

Lasantha Wickremetunga known for his investigative journalism was a vehement critic of the Mahinda Rajapaksa government and was embroiled in a battle with the then Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa threatening to reveal irregularities in a MiG aircraft deal.
