Jan 07, Colombo: Former United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) parliamentarian Shantha Bandara has been appointed to fill the UPFA national list Parliament post left vacant by the resignation of MLAM Hizbullah following the nomination by the General Secretary of the UPFA.

UPFA national list Parliamentarian MLAM Hizbullah resigned following his appointment as Governor of the Eastern Province by President Maithripala Sirisena.

The Election Commission today issued the Extraordinary Gazette notification declaring that Kuda Vidanalage Shantha Bandara elected as a member of the Eighth Parliament after UPFA General Secretary nominated him as an eligible person to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Alim Muhammad Hizbullah Lebbe.

Shantha Bandara contested in the Kurunegala District at the 2015 general election from the UPFA. He is also the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Youth Organization.

President Maithripala Sirisena in May 2018 appointed Shantha Bandar as the Chairman of the State Timber Cooperation (STC) following the arrest of former chairman of the STC P. Dissanayake on bribery charges.
