Jan 05, Colombo: Seven Sri Lankan fishermen who were deported from the French Réunion Island after they attempted to migrate illegally, will return to the island today (05), the Monitoring, Controlling and Surveillance Division of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development said.

The seven fishermen who have left Sri Lanka on 5th December on a multi-day fishing boat have been arrested when they attempted to illegally migrate to the Réunion Island.

The fishermen will be arrested when they arrive in the country early Saturday morning for attempting to illegally migrate, Assistant Director of the Monitoring, Controlling and Surveillance Division Padmapriya Thisera said.

He said that such an unauthorized migration could lead to the loss of facilities such as the GSP facility that has been provided to Sri Lanka.
