Jan 03, Colombo: Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the relevant authorities to take immediate measures to solve the garbage disposal problem of Kandy, the central hill capital city.
The garbage collected from the Kandy urban area which is now being dumped at Gohagoda waste disposal site in Katugastota, has become a major environmental concern.
At a discussion held in President's Office Thursday on regulating the activities of the Gohagoda Waste Management Center,, the President stressed the authorities to take immediate action to implement a proper disposal system to avoid another tragedy like Meethotamulla.
Residents of the area have complained of several issues regarding the Katugasthota-Gohagoda garbage dump where garbage from several local government institutions in the city including the Kandy Municipal Council is disposed.
The President instructed the Central Environmental Authority to assist the Kandy Municipal Council and Central Provincial Council to jointly implement a program to dispose the garbage through a proper recycling system and resolve the problem without allowing the public to suffer.
