Feb 28, Colombo: An event to mark 30 years of the parliamentary political life of Finance Minister and Matara district parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera was held at the BMICH under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (28).
Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga and Opposition leader Mahinda Rajapaksa graced the occasion.
Special guest former U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Samantha Power joined as the keynote speaker.
Elected to the Sri Lanka parliament for the first time in 1989 under the Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP), Minister Samaraweera has held a number of important ministerial portfolios, rendering a yeoman service to the people of the country and in Matara.
Addressing the event organized under the theme "30 Years of daring to Dream - Khema's boy", the President said Minister Samaraweera who works with a strong commitment on every task entrusted with him is a politician who respects democracy and reconciliation.
The President appreciated his 30 years of political career and extended his blessings for future activities.
Keynote Speaker Ambassador Powers said Minister Mangala Samaraweera is one of the most extraordinary people she encountered in her eight years of U.S. government and entire career and she has to be part of the "momentous occasion" to celebrate the politician's milestone.
A distinguished gathering including state officials, ambassadors and other distinguished invitees were present at the occasion.
