* UNP appoints a committee to probe State Minister Ramanayake's allegations

Feb 21, Colombo: The United National party has appointed a four-member special committee to look into the controversial statement made by the State Minister Ranjan Ramanayake that 24 politicians including ministers and parliamentarians are abusing cocaine and other illegal drugs.

The committee is headed by MInister Lakshman Kiriella and comprising State Minister Eran Wickramaratne, MP Ashu Marasinghe and Presidents Counsel Nissanka Nanayakkara as the members.

State Minister Ramanayake said there are about five to six current government ministers among the 24 politicians alleged of using cocaine.

It has been reported that State Minister Ramanayake was informed to appear before the committee at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow (22) regarding the probe into the allegations.

The findings of this committee will be presented to the Working Committee of the party next month, the UNP said.
