Mon, Feb 18, 2019, 11:41 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

Feb 18, Colombo: The media unit of the Ministry of Education has issued a statement in response to the baseless allegations by some groups regarding the Surakshsa insurance policy for students.

The Education Ministry statement said that certain factions are attempting to spread false rumors claiming students are not given due benefits under the Surakshsa scheme.

The Ministry explained that the Suraksha Insurance Scheme was launched with the aim of granting an insurance cover for the student population of the country totaling more than 4.5 million.

Benefits are being provided on behalf of the health needs of the children and to ensure their future during a loss of their parents. 200,000 rupees is being provided when a child is hospitalized for treatment while the amount paid for private treatment this year was to be increased to 20,000 rupees. It is mentioned that action had been taken to increase the payment made on behalf of a death of a parent to 200,000 rupees.

The Education Ministry has already informed that the Suraksha Insurance applications and the related documents be certified by the Principals and be directed to the Health and Nutrition Branch of the Education Ministry.

Accordingly the Ministry said that all necessary initiatives had been taken in the past to grant benefits to the children after directing the information to the Insurance institution concerned.

Ministry of Education says the final decision for the selection of an insurance company for the granting of the Suraksha Insurance is being undertaken without the mediation of the Ministry and the subject Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam does not intervene in the decision.

The Education Ministry has emphasized that the selection of the insurance institution is being made on a decision of the Presidential Procurement Appeals Board.

The Education Ministry said action will be taken against baseless allegations levelled by certain trade unions of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation if they continue to spread false rumors damaging the image of the Ministry.
