* 17 youths arrested with drugs on pilgrimage to Sri Pada

Feb 17, Colombo: Sri Lanka Police during a special operation conducted yesterday (16) have arrested 17 youths, who were engaged in a pilgrimage to the sacred Sri Pada mountain with drugs in their possession.

During the emergency raid conducted by the Hatton Police Anti Vice squad at the Police Check Point in Diyagala on Hatton Colombo main road, the police found Keralal Cannabis, 'ICE' and cannabis mixed 'Madana Modaka' pills.

The suspects, between 25 and 30 years of age are residents of Galle, Matara and Colombo areas.

They are to be produced before the Hatton Magistrate's Court today.

Meanwhile, the OIC of the Nallathanniya Police Laksiri Fernando said that over 100,000 pilgrims had arrived over the Hatton road yesterday (16).

Special police teams have been deployed day and night on the route to Sri Pada to arrest pilgrims who bring drugs and liquor.
