Feb 13, Colombo: Minister of Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development, Palani Digambaram says an agreement has been reached to provide an allowance to the estate workers from this year's budget in addition to the basic daily wage of Rs. 750 agreed upon under the new Memorandum of Understanding signed last month.

Minister of Plantation Industries Navin Dissanayake, Labor Minister Ravindra Samaraweera and members of the Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA), of which Minister Digambaram is the leader, held a discussion yesterday (12) at the Minister of Hill Country New Villages, Infrastructure and Community Development.

Minister Digambaram said it is a great victory for the TPA which held discussions with the government to obtain the allowance from the budget and the allowance will be paid to the estate workers with the arrears. He added that the new Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Estate Employers Association and Estate Trade Unions cannot be challenged in courts.

With the allowance from the budget, an estate worker will receive a daily wage of over Rs. 800. In addition estate owners have agreed to pay Rs.40 for each additional kilo of tea leaves.
