Educational Ministry has planned program to distribute e-tablets free of charge to G.C.E. A/L students and teachers on the instructions of the Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.

The program to provide tablets will be implemented under the government's initiative to reform school education in line with the global needs of modern education.

Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera has agreed to prioritize the project and allocate funds in the budget for implementation.

Accordingly, the pilot project will be implemented targeting the GCE A/L students in 1AB schools. Focusing on the progress and other issues, three months after the pilot project, it is planned to implement the project at all schools in the country.

Education Minister Viraj Kariyawasam is to enlighten the President, the Prime Minister and the cabinet on the overall design and the pilot project of Tablet computer program at the next Cabinet meeting.

Minister Kariyawasam obtained cabinet approval in February, 2018 for the e-tablet project but President Maithripala Sirisena opposed the implementation of the project claiming it is not feasible for the government to spend Rs. 5 billion annually to provide the tablets free of charge.
