Feb 07, Colombo: A special discussion has been held at the President's official residence at Mahagamasekara Mawathe, Colombo 07 Wednesday night (06) on the broad-based political alliance that is expected to be formed by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), local media reported.
The discussion was chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena. Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa, SLPP Chairman Prof. GL Peiris, MPs Dayasiri Jayasekara, Mahinda Amaraweera, Dinesh Gunawardena, Wimal Weerawansa Udaya Gammanpila, Douglas Devananda, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, AHM Athaulla, Prof. Tissa Vitharana and a group of senior party members participated in the discussion.
It is reported that the discussion on the formation of the new political alliance lasted for about two hours.
At this discussion a decision has been taken to broaden the committee, appointed by the SLPP and headed by Dullas Alahapperuma to establish a new political alliance, by including several representatives of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).
Accordingly, Dayasiri Jayasekara, Thilanga Sumathipala, AHM Athaulla and Douglas Devananda have been appointed to the committee and Udaya Gammanpila has been appointed as the convener of the committee.
It is reported that the committee has been tasked with reaching an agreement on a new political alliance within the next two weeks.
Following the committee discussions, the party leaders of the alliance are to meet under the patronage of the President on the 16th or 17th of this month.
