Apr 20, Colombo: Sri Lanka's Speaker Karu Jayasuriya says he will consider stepping forward as a candidate for the anticipated presidential election if he has the full consent of the people and the party.

The Speaker made this statement speaking to media after meeting with the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiri chapters Saturday morning in Kandy.

The Speaker called on the Malwatte and Asgiriya Mahanayakes today to receive blessings for the New Year.

The Speaker first visited the Chief Prelate of the Asgiri Chapter Most Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thero and engaged in a brief conversation with the Thero after receiving blessings.

Speaker Jayasuriya then visited the Malwathu Chapter Chief Prelate Most Ven. Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera. He also met with the Anunayake of Malwathu Chapter Ven. Dimbuakumbure Sri Vimaladharma Thera.

Speaking to media afterwards, the Speaker said so far he has never demanded a post or title and if everyone comes to an agreement based on public opinion, he can consider a proposal to contest for presidency.
