Apr 20, Colombo: The national program for distributing a glass of fresh milk to school children will be commenced on the 22nd under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The program under the theme "Kiren Sapiri Deyak" (Nation Rich with Milk) will begin at the Kajugaswatta Maha Vidyalaya in Kalawana.
The objective of this program is to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient in liquid milk and raise the levels of nutrition of schoolchildren. Strengthening the local dairy farmer is another objective of the program.
The government has allocated Rs. 1 billion this year for the program.
The Presidential Secretariat in coordination with the Grama Shakthi Movement and the Ministries of Education and the Livestock Development will implement the project to provide a glass of milk daily to the primary school children from grade one to grade 5 will be implemented.
A special discussion on the national event was held recently at the Kadjugaswatta Maha Vidyalaya, Kalawana under the patronage of Sabaragamuwa Governor Dhamma Dissanayake wih the participation of people's representatives and government officials.
Parallel to the national program, many farmers in Kalawana will be provided with many facilities.
