Apr 20, Colombo: With the opening of the newly constructed railway line from Matara to Beliatta, the daily income from the Beliatta railway station alone exceeds Rs. 500,000, the Railway Department says.
The revenues are expected to increase in the next few days as the Railway Department expects to operate 11 special trains on April 20, 21 and 22 for the people who travelled to the villages during the New Year season to return to Colombo.
The Railway Department's Superintendent (Transportation), ADG Seneviratne said the Matara and Beliatta stations even ran out of the tickets and a new stock of tickets had to be issued for the two stations.
On the Matara - Beliatta railway line opened on April 8, seven trains start from Beliatta railway station. One of them will be traveling to Galle and 4 trains will travel to Maradana. The other two trains will run up to Jaffna and Vavuniya.
There are 6 trains ending at Beliatta railway station. Destination for 5 of them is Maradana and one train goes to Vavuniya.
Trains can travel at 120 kmph on the high speed railway rack and the journey from Matara to Beliatta takes only 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, from the special bus service commenced from April 8th to 13th, the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) has earned an income of over 400 million rupees. The SLTB officials expect a similar income from the passengers returning after the New Year.
